Hi Pack 100,
Your scout will be receiving their Pinewood Derby car kits at their den meetings this week. This is rather lengthy, but please read all to ensure everyone is in the loop.

Our pack car cutting night is scheduled for Wednesday, March 1st from 5:30pm - 7:00pm at SUMC. They can arrive anytime in this period to get assistance with getting their cars cut. This is optional if you have the tools at home, but is a fun event where kids can swap ideas.  NOTE: If you have a bandsaw, belt sander, or we can use your help on car cutting night! Let me know.

To prepare for this event, the scouts should have a clear idea of how they would like to design their cars. Attached is a design template that they can use to help sketch ideas. I will also make sure each has a printout when they get their cars. Once they have a design, they will draw on their block of wood their design and hand it off to an adult to cut. They then have the next 3 weeks to sand, paint, install wheels and weight at home. If you have any questions about how this works please feel free to email directly.

In addition to trophies for the top 3 racers, there will also be awards for favorite car in the following categories: Patriotic, Humorous/Funny, Unusual, Scout Spirit, and Creative based on scout vote.

We promote having the scouts design and do as much work as their abilities allow. For parents and siblings wishing to make their own cars, we will have an Open Class race the day of the derby where anyone can participate!  You can purchase extra car kits for $5 from your den leader (or pick one up at any scout store).  Note, that Open Class cars can weigh up to 7oz, but all other rules apply.

Car registration and check-in will happen on Friday March 24th from 5pm to 7pm.  Your car will be impounded at check-in pending the actual race on SaturdayThis ensures we can start right at 4:30pm on race day. You will want to make sure your car is as close to 5oz as possible prior to coming. We will have some tools and extra weights around to do fine tuning.

Our Derby race is Saturday, March 25th at 4:30pm to 7pm at the SUMC. Plan on having lunch and snacks at the church. We will have pizza and snacks for our hungry racers and family.

Parents, things to keep in mind when your son is building their car. If you use the pre-cut slots and the supplied axles and wheels, the main thing you have to be aware of is:
  1. Car cannot be heavier than 5oz.
  2. We must be able to see each end of the axle nails (don't cover with weights).
  3. The front of the car can not be notched in.  The track has pins that hold the car at the starting line that sit in the front middle.  The car body and wheels must be entirely behind these pins when resting.
If your scouts design requires moving the axles slots or you are looking to do something out of the ordinary, please review all the official car specs to make sure your car can race. See the attached full official rules for all details on building your cars

Thank you!
